    Sojourners Going Nowhere

    July 17, 2018

    |

    Brooke Williams

I've always loved to look inside of cars while on the road, and look at the people inside.  As a kid, I would gaze at the people inside the car next to me and wonder about them.  Are they happy?  Do they have a good family?

We are all sojourners.  On the road, everyone is going somewhere.  Yet so many don't know where they are going.  So many are going there empty.  Today, on the way to football camp for my son, I looked into a car stopped next to me at a red light and noticed a weary, burned out, discouraged traveler.  She was living out her day to day, probably heading to work, and the weight of it all was written all over her face.  And I wondered all over again.  What is burdening her?  Is she just existing to get through the day?  Does she know how precious her life is?  How precious every moment is?

Life is hard.  So many struggles out there that we are facing.  How can we live each day light and full of joy, beyond status quo, in a world that can be heavy and draining?  I know what the Bible says.

"Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you.  Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light."  Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus no longer walks this earth with us.  But he didn't leave us alone.  He left His Word with us, to give us life and revelation.  THIS WORD is our lifeline.  THIS WORD is our daily bread.  THIS WORD sustains us and reminds us and compels us...to live beyond status quo.

Yet, it sits on the shelf.  God's living and active word collects dust and gets trumped by social media and sitcoms.

What would I have told that lady at the stop light if I could have?  Open God's Word.  Take it in.  Rest in it.  Because He will shine light in the dark places and revive your soul.

How do we live our best life?  Be in His Word.  Consider it your lifeline.  After all, it's written by the Creator Himself.
